The learning project

Team work would be so nice – if the others wouldn’t make things so much harder for you! The reality is, however, that everyone in the team has his or her own way of seeing things. And if the team members don’t manage to share their different points of view with each other, the lack of information inevitably leads to misunderstanding. – and, in turn, to inadequate coordination and to delays. In specific terms this means that you need to communicate your perspective clearly and unambiguously and to really listen to your colleagues in order to fully understand where they’re coming from. Because only excellent communication and coordination can lead to excellent results!

How It’s Done

Just like in the real world, building the FutureCity requires “Visionaries” and “Doers” to work well together. Each Visionary has a picture card containing the relevant information for their construction project, but they are not allowed to show their cards either to the other Visionaries or the Doers. The Visionaries must solely rely on clever communication to coordinate their plans with each other and with the Doers – because only the Doers are allowed to touch the building blocks they will use to construct the FutureCity. Only when all of the team members really coordinate properly with each other can the building project be constructed step by step according to plan. But, be careful, because the building blocks look different from the different perspectives. Just because the building block looks blue to one Visionary doesn’t by any stretch of the imagination mean it looks the same to another. This learning project is ideal for group sizes of 4 to 24 participants and can be adapted to suit the desired level of difficulty.

„Das Tool ist genial. Emotion pur!“, war mein Impuls schon nach dem allerersten Einsatz von FutureCity. Es sorgt für Aufregung, Gesprächsstoff und Veränderungsbereitschaft und kann in ganz unterschiedlichen Kontexten eingesetzt werden. Wer z. Abhängig von der Inszenierung von FutureCity liegt viel Zündstoff in seiner Durchführung – vor allem für „Visionäre“, die ohne Sicht auf die „Macher“ arbeiten und extrem auf Informationen von den anderen Visionären und Machern angewiesen sind. Die Verwirrung der unterschiedlichen Sichtweisen zu klären und auf ein gemeinsames Verständnis zu bringen, bedarf eines intensiven Austauschs untereinander. FutureCity spiegelt die unterschiedlichen Vorgehensweisen des Einzelnen und des Teams in Echtzeit! Dieses Tool gibt eine Steilvorlage für intensive Reflexionsarbeit. Es eignet sich wunderbar für Teams, die im Alltag interdisziplinär und räumlich voneinander entfernt gemeinsam erfolgreich Projekte meistern möchten.

Die Interaktionsmetaphern von FutureCity zeigen u. a., in welchem Dilemma Führungskräfte häufig stehen, wenn sie nur begrenzte Informationen haben oder mit der immer gleichen Brille die Welt betrachten. Wie können viele unterschiedliche Experten agil handeln, Informationen und Wissen „sinn-voll“ austauschen, verknüpfen und fokussieren, sodass hochkomplexe Projekte effektiv umgesetzt werden können? Das alles lässt dieses mitunter hochemotionale Tool sichtbar und fühlbar werden.

Die Entscheidung für dieses Tool fällt leicht. Mit 12 Projektleiter*innen, die für den Bau von öffentlichen Gebäuden verantwortlich sind, starte ich das Lernprojekt FutureCity:

 Fazit: Auch erfahrene Projektleiter*innen verspüren die größte Herausforderung darin, die eigene Perspektive zu vermitteln und die Perspektiven anderer anzuerkennen und gleichzeitig die eigene Rolle und Arbeitsposition in dem Projekt (hier Macher, Visionär) zu akzeptieren. Die TN erlebten das Lernprojekt als „absolut alltagsnah und inspirierend für ihre eigene Kommunikation und Arbeitsweise in den Projekten“ – „Das vergesse ich bestimmt nicht“, lautete eine Rückmeldung. „Und Spaß hat es außerdem gemacht“, so eine weitere Teilnehmerin.

 Ach ja, noch ein Tipp für die Trainer*in: Als Auftraggeberin muss aufgepasst werden, dass bei einer gewissen Größe der Gruppe der Blick in die Karten der Anderen nicht allzu leicht fällt ?
