Communication training: metacommunication, facilitating, dealing with different perspectives

 

Activity

Great teams make great things happen. But the constant challenge of meeting or even exceeding objectives is very demanding for everyone involved. “How should we treat each other?”, “What’s important for each of us when we work as a team?”, “Who’s taking the lead?”: These are just some of the many questions that need answering. The answers are the keys to producing effective and synergetic teamwork.

 

How it’s done

In a separate area, the trainer places 6 wooden blocks upright on the floor. Each participant picks one of the strings and holds it at the end (or several strings, depending on the number of participants; if necessary, individual strings can be removed). The task is for the team to steer the crane with the strings and build a tower by placing the blocks on top of each other. The participants are not allowed to touch the blocks with their hands or any other part of their bodies. This is a truly tricky task: the way the blocks are designed does not allow for a hectic, uncoordinated approach. The task can only be solved through precise communication and well-organized teamwork. 

 

Variation

If the tower falls over during the process of building, you can intervene by having your group build a three-storey-house instead. This method prevents the group from "failing" and learning processes can be easily integrated into the task.
